2010-2011 UC Graduate Student Health Insurance Plan (UC GSHIP)

Insurance Benefits

We are happy to report that the Graduate Student Health Insurance Plan (UC GSHIP) workgroup has successfully negotiated a system-wide insurance plan for UC students effective FALL 2010. UC Hastings will be one of six campuses to participate in the first year.

By pooling graduate student purchasing power and merging with several other UC campuses, Hastings was able to negotiate reduced insurance premiums. Premiums decrease while benefits increase.

Effective Dates

The UC GSHIP plan goes into effect as of Fall 2010:

  • August 9 - LEOP & LLM students
  • August 18 - Newly admitted students
  • August 23 - Returning students

Benefits Summary

To learn more about the plan, see the benefits summary.  This summary is a brief description of some highlights of the plan. More information and details will be disclosed soon. Please stay tuned and check back often!

Student Health Insurance is included in your tuition fees. The insurance premiums for the 2010-2011 school year will be $993 for the fall and $1,371 for the spring/summer, for a total of $2,364 for the year.

Network of Providers

Referrals are needed for all off campus practitioners. A new insurance plan means a new network of providers. If you are currently being seen by a non-Student Health provider for any type of specialty care (such as a chronic condition, surgery, pregnancy or mental health), you'll want to check to see if they are part of your new network - Anthem Blue Cross PPO. To check, please select the following prompts on the network website:

  • Large Group (not Student Coverage)
  • Blue Cross PPO (Prudent Buyer)

If your current provider is out-of-network on the new plan, they will be subject to lower reimbursement. In this case, it may be in your best interest to submit a Transition of Care Request Form to Anthem Blue Cross. Submitting this form allows Anthem to review your needs on an individual basis and arrange for you to keep seeing your network provider at a higher rate if it will prevent a serious disruption to your care. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for a limited period of time.

To submit the Transition of Care Request Form, fill it out and fax it to Anthem Blue Cross, the new student insurance plan administrator. The fax number is 1-877-214-1781. Submit this form ASAP to allow time for processing. If you have questions about this form, please call Anthem's Transition Assistance Department at 1-888-486-4227.

Please note: Anthem is required to protect the health information you provide and will not disclose or use in any way that is not allowed under federal or state law.
